NOBLE ALLIANCE PRESENTS ANA PALACIOS

Noble Alliance is proud to introduce Ana Palacios, a visual journalist whose work serves as a necessary act of witness to the human-animal bond. In her latest project, “Sanctuaria”, she enters the cloistered world of animal sanctuaries—habitats she reveals not merely as shelters, but as sites of a rare and demanding architecture of trust. These are spaces where resilience and care manifest in ways that unsettle common assumptions about how our species might live alongside another.

In a landscape so often saturated by digital noise and the hollow perfection of synthetic imagery, Palacios’ work insists upon a different caliber of attention. She possesses an eye for the "slow truth"—the incommensurable wealth inherent in our connection to the animal world. Her work prompts a reckoning with the familiar: How does the sanctuary reveal the distinct, sovereign personality of a rescued life? What is the texture of an encounter built on nothing but patience? Palacios’ photography resists the blur of a world in haste, reminding us that to attend to the lives of other species is, by extension, to expand the dimensions of our own.

This commitment to the "unseen" is the pulse of Textures of an Alliance. This interview unfolds within a project by Noble Alliance that seeks to map a territory at once intimate and vast: the immense, existential bounty of the human-animal bond. It is a shared history that offers a richness we are often strangely, perhaps even tragically, ill-equipped to name. We live in the presence of a silent grace, but our shared lexicon frequently stammers when tasked with describing the true scale of what animals bring to our existence.

Where language fails, Textures of an Alliance recognizes a form of cultural justice in the work of the artist. Art—and Palacios’ photography is a prime exemplar—possesses a unique, luminous capacity to give voice to the wordless, rendering the intangible riches of the bond into something sharply felt and understood.

The platform rests on a mirroring logic: just as the bond between species slips beneath the skin of culture and geography, so too does art bypass the requirement of a common tongue. One needs no dictionary to be moved by the searing clarity of Palacios’ imagery. In this dialectic—between a relationship that ignores borders and a medium that speaks a universal language—something transformative occurs.

By bringing such artists to the fore, the platform affirms that art is the essential bridge: the means by which the immense value of the human-animal bond is finally accorded its permanent residence in the human imagination.

ABOUT

ANA PALACIOS

Ana Palacios is a Spanish visual journalist working on long-term projects related to human rights, environmental issues, and animal welfare. She holds a degree in Journalism from the University of Navarra and trained in film directing in Los Angeles. Before photography became her full-time vocation, she spent 17 years working in international film production, collaborating with renowned directors such as Ridley Scott, Jim Jarmusch, Milos Forman, and Roman Polanski.

In 2010, a transformative journey to India marked a turning point in her career. While documenting the work of a community of women missionaries, she discovered the power of photography to raise awareness, mobilize audiences, and inspire concrete action. Since 2015, photography has been her primary profession, with a practice grounded in slow journalism, ethics, empathy, and long-term commitment.

‘Sanctuaria’ is one of her most personal and transformative projects. Developed since 2020, it documents animal sanctuaries and rescue centers, portraying animals rescued from exploitation while also highlighting the humans who care for them. The project explores alternative, compassionate ways of coexisting with non-human animals and proposes a shift towards more ethical, sustainable, and conscious lifestyles.

‘Sanctuaria’ is currently seeking support to be developed into a photobook and a travelling exhibition. Raising awareness, building alliances, and securing ethical funding are essential steps to ensure the project’s impact and long-term sustainability.

“SANCTUARIA”
LABORATORIES OF ETHICAL ALTERNATIVES

‘What was the primary inspiration behind the creation of ‘Sanctuaria’?

Sanctuaria’ emerged almost unintentionally. I first visited an animal sanctuary out of an assignment, when the Pandemic stop all my trips to Africa and this assignment came out of the blue. Totally unexpected, it left deeply transformed. Spending time in these spaces confronted me with animals as individuals, each with a biography, memory, and emotional life. I realized that sanctuaries are not only places of rescue, but also laboratories of ethical alternatives. That experience sparked a personal and professional journey that I felt compelled to document.

SPACES OF REFLECTION

Do you feel that sanctuaries are the ideal setting to capture and cultivate public awareness regarding animal dignity?

Yes, absolutely. Sanctuaries allow animals to be seen beyond labels such as ‘farm animal’ or ‘product’. They exist as individuals with dignity and emotional depth. Photographing them in these environments creates space for reflection and invites viewers to reconsider deeply ingrained cultural norms and traditions.

EXPLORING BONDS

While documenting these havens, which aspect of the bond between humans and animals has touched or surprised you the most?

What has moved me most is the reciprocity. These relationships are not based on domination, utility, or profit, but on care, patience, and mutual trust. Many caregivers speak of animals as teachers, mirrors, or companions. Witnessing how healing flows in both directions has been profoundly moving.

BEARING WITNESS

Does photographing within these spaces present any unique emotional reflections or challenges for you as an artist?

It is emotionally intense and that makes it especially challenging for me. Knowing what many of these animals have endured requires constant emotional awareness and responsibility. As a journalist, I constantly balance closeness with clarity and empathy with restraint, making sure the story honors those I photograph rather than reflecting my own emotional response.

BONDS OF RESILIENCE

How do you navigate the balance between depicting suffering and preserving hope and sensitivity?

I choose not to photograph violence explicitly. Instead, I focus on resilience, recovery, and presence, which I understand as different forms of love and actively seek in my photographic work. Hope does not negate suffering, it contextualizes it. By showing care, time, and respect, the images invite reflection rather than shock, which can ultimately be counterproductive to the project’s goals.

ANOTHER WORLD IS POSSIBLE

What is the core message you hope viewers take away from your work?

That another way of relating to animals is possible. One based on respect, responsibility, and empathy. ‘Sanctuaria’ invites viewers to question everyday choices and recognize animals as sentient beings deserving of ethical consideration.

In what ways do you believe ‘Sanctuaria’ can inspire or shift public perception?

By offering a visual narrative rooted in calm, intimacy, and respect. Rather than accusing or preaching, the project opens a space for dialogue. I believe that emotional connection is the first step towards change, and ‘Sanctuaria’ aims to be that bridge.
